Polygon Map for Census Tracts

My previous post about making polygon maps:

Build Census Tract Map in Tableau

I had problems with making shaded maps with census tracts, because I was using Tableau files created by https://tableaumapping.bi/ and didn’t have the excel dataset.

I just realized that it’s not that complicated if you have your census tract data file (which I do have…) and primary data file, put them as two sheets in one excel file, and join two tables under data source.

The census tract data file can be generated using GIS.

This tutorial helped me understand it: Creating a custom polygon map for Connecticut towns in Tableau

So basically after proper data blending, you can use census tracts just like using (build-in geographical roles such as) zip codes.
